主人公黄沙鼓是民间踏实本分的木工匠人，靠着传统手艺营生。因木匠中有人搬弄封建迷信传说诈取东家钱财，路见不平的黄沙鼓誓要揭穿其中骗局，为传统匠人宣扬正气，立志捅破一切封建迷信的谎言。。在不远的未来，乔原本过着平静而规律的生活，直到有一天，他在自己经营的书店里遇到了艾什，两人很快坠入爱河。可不久后，两人在约会的时候，一名陌生男子突然拔出手枪向艾什射击，艾什死于枪口之下。而后悲痛欲绝的乔却意外的收到来自艾什的信息，这时他发现这一切都不是他想象的样子，在背后隐藏着一个巨大的阴谋……。Plebs is described as "a thoroughly modern comedy in an ancient setting."
